History of Directorate of IPLA

The directorate was previously known as the Moi University External Liaison Office (MUELO) that was in charge of International Affairs, Alumni and University Industrial Linkages started in 1999. The office was later referred to as International Programmes Office (IPO) in January, 2001 in order for it to play its rightful role in the internationalization process of Higher Education. An International Committee of the University (ICU) was set up on 25th January, 2001 with the overall mandate to explore and strengthen the concept and practice of internationalization process of the university.

The directorate was renamed in 2016 as "Directorate of International programmes, Linkages & Alumni" (IPLA). IPLA facilitates admission process of international students, process their study permits and alien cards, process work permits for expatriates and looks into their general welfare during their stay in Kenya. It is responsible for marketing the University abroad and also recruiting and admitting International Students. The directorate is also mandated to coordinate International student exchange programs and articulates agreements with foreign institutions.

With a view to making students have a feel of the diverse cultures and interact freely the directorate of IPLA also is responsible for organization of international students’ activities like Cultural Days, International students’ elections, excursions and other events for International students that may arise.

The office recognizes the presence of international students/Alumni/Scholars/Staff in the University.  The first batch of international students, now Alumni of Moi University were admitted to the Department of Forestry, Faculty of Forest Resources and Wildlife Management.  Two students were from Rwanda and five from Malawi admitted in the 1996/1997 academic year.

Currently there is an International Student population of over 200 from across 23 different countries enrolled in programmes offered by 15 schools. Over the years we have received students from different countries including Tanzania, Zanzibar, Uganda , South Sudan, Rwanda, Malawi, Zambia, Ethiopia., Botswana, Burundi, Cameroon. Gambia India, Japan, Mali, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Germany, Liberia, Mozambique, South Korea, Bangladesh,  United States of America  and the Netherlands.

The creation of the International Programmes Linkages & Alumni is a key strategic initiative geared towards the strengthening sustainable internationalization.  We are committed to providing services that benefit students’ health, safety and welfare; we are equally committed to enhancing the opportunities for learning through various Co-Curriculum activities and recreational programs.
