History of Directorate of IPLA

Moi University was the first University to be initiated and developed solely by Kenyans. It is named after the 2nd President of the republic of Kenya, Hon. Daniel Toroitich arap Moi. The idea of establishing Moi University started in January 1981, with the appointment of a Presidential Working Party headed by Prof. Mackay. This body, after considering the demand for higher education vis-a-vis the existing institutions of higher learning, recommended the establishment of a second university in the country.

The International Office was established in 2001 as International Liaison Office, and given a status of a Directorate as International Programmes Office in 2002. In 2008 the office renamed International Office (IO) and in 2016, it was renamed International Office & Alumni. The International Office and Alumni (IO & A) assists international students in processing their study permits and alien cards, process work permits for expatriates and their general welfare during their stay in Kenya. It also coordinates International student exchange programs and articulates agreements with international institutions. The IO & A also is responsible for organization of international students’ activities like Cultural Days, International students’ elections and other events for International Students that may arise.

The office recognizes the presence of international students/Alumni/Scholars/Staff in the University. The first batch of international students, now Alumni of Moi University were admitted to the Department of Forestry, Faculty of Forest Resources and Wildlife Management. Two students were from Rwanda and five from Malawi admitted in the 1996/1997 academic year.

The creation of the International Office & Alumni is a key strategic initiative geared towards the strengthening of the practice and sustainable internationalization. We are committed to providing services that benefit students’ health, safety and welfare; we are equally committed to enhancing the opportunities for learning through various Co-Curriculum activities and recreational programs.
